Rhode Island Bandwagon
"Where Home Is," "A Piece of Our Hearts," and "Surrender to Serenity"
Inspired by Bob Geldof's Live Aid concert, producer and songwriter Al Gomes wanted to put together a similar effort to aid those less fortunate in Rhode Island. Gomes founded Rhode Island Bandwagon in 1986, which produced two successful concerts, and the award-winning fundraising recording Three Sides of Hunger, featuring the most popular recording artists in the area including John Cafferty, Mark Cutler, and a 150-person choir consisting of musicians (inluding L7's Gail Greenwood and legendary singer/songwriter Bill Flanagan), broadcasters, politicians, and service agency heads.
Three Sides of Hunger went on to raise thousands of dollars for agencies in Rhode Island that aid the hungry and homeless, and raised maximum awarenes of the plight of the poor in our state. In 1987, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Foundation awarded Rhode Island Bandwagon its prestigious Jefferson Award for outstanding Public Service.
Unfortunately, hunger and homelessness continue to affect increasing numbers of people every day. On May 5th, 1985, when Three Sides of Hunger was recorded, 300 people were fed daily at Amos House in Providence, RI. Today, Amos House feeds over 1200 people daily.
Agencies like Amos House rely on donations and volunteers to keep their programs running. You can help by volunteering at one of the many agencies that provide food and shelter for RI's hungry and homeless.
