BUN B
TRILL
RAP-A-LOT
Stars graphics

By the time they’ve been in the game 15 years, most rappers are coasting, resigned to elder-statesman status and putting in appearances on VH1 award shows. But like vintage purple drank, Houston legend Bun B appears to be getting better with age. While his UGK partner, Pimp C, has been locked up, Bun’s been laying down a series of impeccable guest verses, en route to releasing Trill, the solo album he said he’d never make. Fortunately for us, C encouraged Bun to make his own mark on the game, and Trill does precisely that. Bun’s gruff baritone and flossy-not-flashy lyrics are branded onto every track, from opener "The Inauguration" (where he flows over a twitchy, cut-up "Hail to the Chief") to the show-stopping "Pushin’." Even with the drug talk and the slab brags, Bun’s true passion comes through on the rough "Draped Up," when he tells his crew, "The South is in the house and they can’t do nothin’ about us." If he sounds like a king readying his troops for battle, well . . . he is.
