Superstar electronica artists like Moby and the Chemical Brothers have made considerable progress in the ongoing effort to get mainstream listeners to recognize DJs and producers as musicians alongside vocalists and guitar players. Still, a singer makes for a handy focal point, so it’s surprising that British brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey made their fifth album as Morcheeba without Skye Edwards, the frontwoman whose smoky vocals earned the outfit whatever trip-hop renown it once commanded, back when trip-hop could earn anyone something beyond in-store play at Crate and Barrel. In Edwards’s place we get Daisy Martey, formerly a member of British psych-pop collagists Noonday Underground; she leads the Godfreys into a slightly tougher version of the tasteful chill-out fluff they made with Edwards, with more live instruments and more fleshed-out songwriting. It’s not an unwelcome twist: "People Carrier" has a cool Austin Powers swing to it, and "Everybody Loves a Loser" crams a block-rocking beat into a mopy meditation on loneliness.
