LADY SOVEREIGN
VERTICALLY CHALLENGED
CHOCOLATE INDUSTRIES
Stars graphics

There’s a lot of pressure when you’re trying to nail your first album after being touted with an immeasurable degree of grime-y hype. There’s a lot more when you’re a 19-year-old British MC and the audience you’re trying to please is the bloodthirsty and unforgiving US bloggerati. Maybe that’s why Lady Sovereign has chosen to ease into the waters, releasing this EP in advance of her much-talked-about 2006 full-length. After all, the eight tracks on Vertically Challenged — a title that may refer to Sov’s diminutive stature or perhaps a certain state of inebriation — are already surefire hits, most of them having circulated on the Internet. "A Little Bit of SHHH," which has been making the rounds for some time, gets a properly mastered release here, and the new "Random" (especially the Menta remix) is equally rousing, all sub-bass rumble and cheeky energy. Not quite a star is born, but close.
