SHARON JONES & THE DAP KINGS
NATURALLY
DAPTONE
Stars graphics

Back in 2002, Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones introduced Jones — a powerful soul shouter with a husky, earthy voice — to the underground soul scene simmering beyond her Brooklyn base. Naturally improves on the retro formula of that disc simply by bringing soulful ballads and tougher R&B hooks to the party. There’s plenty of James Brownian motion here to keep dance floors grooving, and the lo-fi production of classy, swaggering cuts like "Natural Born Lover" and "How Long Do I Have To Wait for You?" create the illusion that this might just be some lost ’60s artifact. It's with the gorgeous ballads — "All Over Again" and "You're Gonna Get It" in particular — that Jones makes her most impressive statements: crooning against a delicate backdrop of echo-drenched guitar, soft horn arrangements, and understated vocal harmonies, she reaches back to a time when the sacred sounds of Sunday were the soundtrack to the secular celebrations of Saturday night. The Dap Kings — Daptone’s house band — again re-create the tight ensemble backing that echoes dozens of mostly anonymous players who once ruled the studios from Motown to Muscle Shoals.
