New Orleans duo Quintron and Miss Pussycat are best appreciated live; what with his customized manual synthesizer/organ (outfitted with headlights) and the beat-generating Drum Buddy and her hand puppets, their shows suggest a glorious, unholy alliance of Kukla, Fran, and Ollie and the Cramps. Yet even boiled down to CD, their theatrical charms project. When Quintron cites funk-jazz innovator Jimmy Smith as an influence, he isn't paying lip service; his chunky riffs even isolate a hip-shaking component in a cover of Kiss’s " God of Thunder. " The repetitive "Swamp Buggy Badass" suggests a cheerier incarnation of Suicide; "Witch in the Club" should inspire some new ways to shimmy. (Speaking of contortions: Quintron's white-boy soul bark on the former cut is a dead ringer for no-wave icon James Chance’s.) Swamp Tech was recorded live to two-track; the sound levels vary erratically across these 11 cuts, but the deranged fun remains constant throughout.
