This is not the first time In Flight has been released: in 1995, Linda Perry was flush from the success of "What’s Up?", the sole hit by her drippy San Francisco band 4 Non Blondes. When the Blondes imploded before making a second album, Perry used her record-biz pull to get Interscope to issue Flight, her solo debut. The disc — much darker and brainier than "What’s Up?" — flopped, and Interscope quickly deleted it. A few weeks ago in the New York Times, Anthony DeCurtis reported that once Perry had established a reputation as an estimable song doctor — she’s worked with Pink, Gwen Stefani, and Christina Aguilera of late — she called up Interscope chief Jimmy Iovine and asked for her album back. So here’s In Flight for the second time, brought to you by the artist-friendly folks at Kill Rock Stars, a small but hearty indie that matches what Perry says are her greatly reduced expectations as an artist. It’s very much a transmission from a place of post-prosperity self-doubt: "Will success fail me?" she wonders at one point. But this clever little album is worth hearing now as early proof of Perry’s knack for the tricky craft of tunemaking.
