The three members of this Brooklyn-based group — they go by Hanoi Jane, Kid Millions, and Fat Bobby, in case you were wondering why guys in indie bands never take stage names — are masters of slightly creepy drone metal. On their seventh album, they offer proof of their skills in "Did I Die," which sounds like Black Sabbath dipped in sizzurp, and "Heavenly Choir," which Millions motors with slo-mo oil-barrel beats. But Oneida can do way more than slightly creepy drone metal, and on The Wedding they prove it. About half the tunes feature a killer string quintet; opener "The Eiger" finds these headbanging barbarians crashing the gates of serious art music with sly grins. "Lavender" is Deerhoof-style quirk rock; "Run Through My Hair" nods to the pastoral, off-kilter whimsy of Brooklyn peers Animal Collective. Best of all, in "High Life," over bleeping synthesizers and triumphant power chords, Jane croons wistfully about pissing in Prospect Park. Eight years into their existence, Oneida are still trying to decide who they want to be. With any luck, they’ll never figure it out.
