This Chicago fivesome have a way with candy-coated power chords — an endless supply, it seems. This, their second batch of high-energy rockist pop, adds half a dozen more well-crafted driving anthems to their songbook. Singer/guitarist Damian Kulash is a whiz at freewheeling pithy post-Weezer slams, delivering wry lyrics with the gritted-teeth seething of the dumped. It’s what cool, guitar-slinging frontmen are meant to do. But then he hits you with his sensitive side, as on the blithe sultry funk of "Oh Lately, It’s So Quiet," where against a slinky sexy slow groove he unleashes a fetching falsetto, the sublime union interrupted by a heartbreaking fuzz bass and guitar break. Note the cute, resigned backing vocals, which coo, "Oh no" — it’s a small, simple expression of the pain that suffuses this album.
