Keak da Sneak has one of the most recognizable voices in rap — or rather, he would if anyone stopped to recognize him. Since the early ’90s, Keak’s been grinding away in semi-obscurity, spinning dope yarns on his way to becoming a Bay Area legend. Problem is, he’s remained just that: a Bay Area legend. Now, with his single "Hyphie" becoming 2005’s buzzword and surprise underground hit, he’s put the spotlight on the Cali rap scene just in time for his finest full-length in years. The gruff, low-voiced Keak cheekily reinterprets pop culture for his own, more devious purposes, telling the ladies to "shake it like a Snapple bottle" and popping and fizzing when you know he’s not talkin’ Alka-Seltzer. On "Something Serious," however, he stops barking, confessing softly over a tinkling piano, "I got four kids to support . . . I hope I don’t go back to slangin’ dope." If there’s any justice in this rap game, the only dope things in Keak’s future will be reviews. BY CHRIS NELSON
