Giant Drag are the LA-based duo Annie Hardy (guitar) and Micah Calabrese (drums and synth). On this debut full-length, their minimalist sound is fleshed out with enough bass to rock harder than you’d expect. Hardy has a penchant for playful song titles like "You’re Full of Shit (Check Out My Sweet Riffs)" and "High Friends in Places," a bright little girl drawl, and a Cobain-like flair for cloaking three-minute pop songs in shreds of overdriven guitar. "Blunt Picket Fence," with its slow pacing and muted trumpets, offers a moody respite and brings to mind a Mazzy Star b-side as Hardy confesses "I’ll kiss your fist for him." In fact, it’s easy to play pick the mid-’90s rock-grrrl influences with Giant Drag; in a song like "YFLMD," they fuse fuzzy Breeders pop and angular Helium riffery. Hardy’s looking for rock in all the right places. Giant Drag + Stellastarr* | Paradise Rock Club, 967 Comm Ave, Boston | Oct 8 | 617.228.6000 BY ELISABETH DONNELLY
