On the surface, there’s nothing special about this year’s emo darlings Fall Out Boy, except, perhaps, that they’re from Ireland. From Under the Cork Tree is stocked with predictably rousing, melodic pop-punk, revved-up by a few hardcore yelps, and confessional lyrics. What’s made FOB such a successful breakout band, aside from a better-than-average video and ceaseless touring, are the healthy doses of humor and cheekiness bassist-songwriter Pete Wentz brings to this otherwise formulaic material. His lyrics go where most commercial emo groups won’t dare. The band’s hit single "Sugar We’re Going Down" is about a boy masturbating to his ex-girlfriend and her new lover (the video’s a TRL favorite). In "Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part To Save the Scene and Stop Going to Shows)," Wentz makes attempts to defend his scene against an onslaught of imaginary critics. But he redeems himself and the band with the screamo parody "I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song," a song that’s every bit as good as its title.
