As Idiot Pilot, 18-year-old Bellingham (Washington) instrumentalist/backing vocalist Daniel Anderson and vocalist/lyricist Michael Harris aim to fuse contemporary pop, electronica, and post-hardcore into edgy, ambient tracks. It’s an aural experiment, a test to see what happens when you mix the unearthly croons of Radiohead with the mind-numbing techno lash of Squarepusher and add a few Locust-style hardcore screams. Opener "Losing Color" begins with a spoken lead-in before easing into a tuneful lullaby with inaudible lyrics; soothing at first, it soon becomes monotonous. The rest mixes softly sung verses with screamed choruses, or lays the screams right on top of the coos. In "A Day in the Life of a Poolshark," Anderson provides the hardcore shrieks while Harris does the too-close-for-comfort drones. The techno instrumental "Les Lumieres" and the straight-up hardcore "The Violent Tango" and "To Buy a Gun" offer variety and proficiency, but that’s as far as Idiot Pilot get in their lab this time.
