ACTION ACTION
DON’T CUT YOUR FABRIC TO THIS YEAR’S FASHION
VICTORY
Stars graphics

The title of this NYC band’s debut is (I hope) a knowing joke: led by singer/guitarist/keyboardist Mark Thomas Kluepfel, Action Action play the sort of self-consciously melodramatic synth-rock that’s all the rage this year — the stuff the Killers brought to Top 40 radio. Kluepfel’s nowhere near the tunesmith head Killer Brandon Flowers is, but he’s almost as shameless in his wholesale appropriations of cheesy ’80s pop moves, and that gives Don’t Cut Your Fabric an enjoyable kick. In "Photograph," he layers Cars keyboard lines over hairspray guitars seemingly lifted from the Def Leppard tune of the same name; in "Drug Like," he can’t seem to decide whether he prefers the vocal delivery of Robert Smith or Dave Gahan, so he rips off both. For better and for worse, This Year’s Fashion is nothing but.
