The Chicago foursome Pelican are fairly new to the InstruMetal craze. But, following the lead of Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, and Mono, they fuse ’70s progressive rock and modern metal into anthemic instrumental epics on this, their second Hydra Head full-length. The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw (out this Tuesday) finds the voiceless band speaking loud and clear over the course of 53 minutes of dissonant intros that explode into complex symphonic climaxes with cinematic overtones. From the delicate, æthereal "Autumn into Summer" to the droned-out guttural heavy hitter "March to the Sea," the album revels in thick guitars and muscular cymbal crashes. It all comes together on the final cut, "Sirius," with its plot-like song structure: quiet exposition, melodic rising action, heavy epic climax, exhausted dénouement, and feedbacked resolution.
