The Sights have been a promising "young" Detroit garage band for, oh, a half-dozen years. Which means there are likely a couple of younger acts populating Motor City dives by now. Unabashedly retro (check out the raunchy "hidden" cover of the Faces’ "Stay with Me" after the last track), drawing on many of the same influences that have made the White Stripes such a phenom, the Sights may yet have to overcome their trad trio instrumentation: Eddie Baranek on reverbed vocals and raunchy guitar, Mike Trombley putting muscle behind hyperactive backbeats, and Bobby Emmett on bass and "left-hand organ." Recorded at Detroit’s dingy-sounding Ghetto Recorders, The Sights opens with a statement of purpose: "I’m Going To Live the Life I Sing About in My Songs," a sweaty romp through what could easily be an early Eric Burdon/Animals outtake that’s here and gone too quickly at just 1:45. The point is well made as the trio go on to employ heavy doses of fuzztone guitar, cymbal-slamming choruses, retro organ fills, and even the occasional vocal harmony with a single-minded ferocity that can’t be taught.
