Doris Henson GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY DeSoto

Yeah, neo-new wave has become a thing over the past few years, thanks to the Killers and the Bravery, not to mention half a dozen other Raptures, Radio 4s, and Interpols. But let’s not forget that Courtney Love was touting the virtues of Echo and the Bunnymen and Duran Duran a decade ago; that the threatening-to-reunite Smashing Pumpkins were never afraid to sound as if they’d grown up on ’80s MTV; and that Ric Ocasek produced that first Weezer album.

The Kansas band Doris Henson certainly haven’t. This sturdy fivesome feature Corgan-esque guitar constructions, glam-rock hooks undercut by a sense of indie humility (the smooth-singing Matt Dunehoo doesn’t sound all that certain when he boasts " I’ve got plans for a big future " in " Big Future, " especially when he croons " I’m . . . the sorriest sight that she’s ever seen " ), and an out-of-place trombonist who fits right in. The Beatles harmonies, buzzing guitars, and cheesy classic-rock moves like dual guitar solos that are too precise to be ironic bring to mind a post-lo-fi Robert GBV Pollard (only with longer songs) and a less slack Stephen Malkmus. But it’s Pollard and Malkmus without the quirks. There’s nothing wrong with Give Me All Your Money: the lyrics are just clever enough, the arrangements are neat and tidy, and for all the nifty little embellishments (the trombone, an occasional guitar solo, a disco beat here, a synth line there, even a bit of feedback), nothing reaches out and grabs you.
