Jesu are the brainchild of former Godflesh vocalist/guitarist Justin K. Broadrick, and the band’s debut is a sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes sinister, often inspiring piece of ugliness. Broadrick has taken his cue from bands like Isis, Neurosis, and the Swans and attempted to create not just music but art. The songs are tapestries of guitars, drums, and electronics whose noise-based soundscape adds up to one huge musical nervous breakdown. In "Friends Are Evil," for example, there’s a droning that goes on for two minutes — it’s both beautiful and horrifying. When the vocals come in on "Tired of Me," you can feel the heartbreak, even if Broadrick’s lyrics aren’t all that heartbroken. Jesu demands to be heard from beginning to end, not in short, song-length installments; it’s by no means an easy listen, but if you’re willing to risk learning something about yourself, Broadrick is more than happy to take you there.
