When frontman Brandon Boyd screams "Hey, Megalomaniac/You’re no Jesus/Yeah you’re no fucking Elvis" on the chorus of the opening track of Incubus’s new Alive at Red Rocks DVD, it’s hard not to detect a hint of irony seeing as how Boyd is perched at center stage, flanked by two enormous vocal monitors and thousands of screaming fans. Yet in this live performance from July 2004 at Colorado’s Red Rocks, Boyd’s shirtless, rock-god poise is, well, justified. Seven years after Incubus’s first major release, the band hit a high point here, delivering a tight, high-energy show that has the feel of an epic. Whereas the DVD offers up the crowd-pleasing renditions of staple radio hits like "Drive," "Wish You Were Here," and "Nice To Know You," the bonus CD plays an equal part in showing off Incubus’s musical diversity. On the previously unreleased "Follow," a regular-metered verse gives way to a furious guitar-powered bridge in 7/8 and a chorus that switches between 9/8 and 11/8. And the plaintive "Monuments and Melodies" simply revels in its own depressing beauty. Whether Boyd’s voice is soaring in a Jeff Buckley–esque falsetto or chanting angrily over gut-wrenching rock, the band prove they have the flexibility to be right there with him.
