The nostalgia for ’70s soul and ’80s R&B never dies, it seems. One-time fans whose current lives are busy with jobs, kids, and mortgages yearn for those good old days when they partied till dawn, then drove home with a late-night buzz (or the Brand New Heavies) still ringing in their ears. Positive Flow’s Donna Gardier and Jesse Ruben have long histories in London’s contemporary R&B scene; Gardier sings with Sting; Ruben has recorded as Ultravibe and worked with the dean of retro new soul, Incognito’s Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick. Although Positive Flow are nowhere as instrumentally brilliant or adventurous as Incognito, they are Incognito’s equals for simmering funk and smoky soul, and Gardier’s voice is as smooth as liquid gold. The mysterious "Red Light Emergency" and the sultry "City Streets" are perfect mood music for Saturday-night cruising and the Sunday chill-out that must follow.
