Thirty-six years after they coined the term "reggae" with the hit "Do the Reggay," Toots and the Maytals have set out on a mission to bring their music to new heights. True Love is a greatest-hits compilation in which each classic Maytals tune is revisited with the help of guest artists from a wide array of genres and the studio expertise of the Boston-based team of Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie. Eric Clapton gives the long-time, Clash-covered favorite "Pressure Drop" some added punch with his whining guitar leads; Shaggy and Rahzeel contribute a modern hip-hop vocal freestyle to "Bam Bam"; No Doubt energize the Specials favorite "Monkey Man" with a loud and frantic ska feel. And Toots joins forces with Bunny Wailer to raise the vocals to a passionate peak on "Take a Trip." Although some older fans might not like the intermingling of contemporary artists with Toots’ classic style in an attempt to attract a younger generation, True Love brings a fresh new dynamic to these classics without marring what made them great to begin with.
