Three years ago, Philadelphia melodic-hardcore heroes Kid Dynamite called it a day with two classic albums on Jade Tree to their name. Soon after, frontman Jason Shevchuk formed None More Black, but his new band have just gotten around to releasing their debut full-length. It was worth the wait: Shevchuk remains one of the most impassioned singer-songwriters in punk, and the group stay true to their DIY roots without being afraid to embrace their formidable pop instincts. Jason and his brother Jeff form a versatile two-guitar army, and Kill Your Idols bassist Paul Delaney contributes extra heft. On the first single, "Dinner’s for Suckers," Jason gets a raunchy tone out of his guitar and turns what sounds like the grim aftermath of a drunken blackout into a deceptively cheery sing-along: "Don’t feel the set-up/Don’t feel the sting/Only feel the fatigue where the body used to break." Elsewhere, he wraps his gentle rasp around plenty more real-life drama, including a friend’s suicide, his crappy day job, and the war in Iraq. Like Alkaline Trio, None More Black have an ornery streak that puts most of their pop-punk rivals to shame.
