96 MINUTES | [ENTERTAINMENT + FLAGSHIP + HOLIDAY + PROVIDENCE PLACE 16 + SHOWCASE] Another warm turd from Adam Sandler’s production company, this stoner vehicle directed by Nicholaus Goosen follows Alex (co-producer/screenwriter Allen Covert) as the 35-year-old video-game tester gets evicted and ends up living with his sweet Grandma Lilly (Doris Roberts) and her two friends (Shirley Jones and Shirley Knight). Like other slackers in the Sandler œuvre, Alex underachieves, whacks off, and wears nondescript clothing, but his way with seniors and his wicked gaming skills endear him to a project manager with nice boobs (Linda Cardellini). Covert, whose face is a strange composite of Mel Gibson and Jon Stewart, can barely convey stoned; the only worthwhile character is bad guy J.P. (Joel David Moore), a gaming prodigy with a Gollum-like multiple-personality disorder. Whirring robotically and muttering random phrases in a high-pitched squeal ("Eject!" "Sit on my face!"), J.P. suggests a subtle, unconscious awareness of how stupid the whole movie is. |
