SKY HIGH

BY TOM MEEK
Stars graphics

Sky High is just that, a high school in the clouds for superhero offspring. It’s divided into the have-powers (heroes) and the have-nots (sidekicks) — the in-crowd versus the geeks. Freshman Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano, the gimpy hanger-on in Lords of Dogtown) flunks his powers test and is relegated to the latter group, gravely disappointing his parents, the Commander (Kurt Russell) and Jetstream (Kelly Preston), highly revered crimebusters who undercover are the most prolific real-estate agents in their tidy burb. We get superpowered pranks, classist hallway jockeying, and a villainous uprising; Wonder Woman Lynda Carter even pops up as Principal Powers, and of course Will finds his mojo when the prom goes Carrie. Derivative and cheesy, yes, but director Mike Mitchell (Deuce Bigalow) spins it all together with the tongue-in-cheek verve of Pee-wee's Playhouse.
