PAPARAZZI

BY TOM MEEK

How did a film penned by a first-time scribe, directed by the Judge Dredd hair stylist, and starring an unknown actor playing an unknown actor attract the talents of Tom Sizemore, Matthew McConaughey, and Chris Rock? The answer probably has something to do with Mel Gibson’s involvement as a producer, but that still doesn’t explain how this nonsensical revenge flick directed by Paul Abascal got rolling in the first place. Square-jawed and generic, Cole Hauser (son of Wings) plays Bo Laramie, a virtual unknown from Montana who makes it big in Tinseltown with the action-movie series Adrenaline Force. That title suggests a Steven Seagal movie, and sure enough, Paparazzi plods along as a cadre of camera-squeezing celeb stalkers harass Laramie and his family until a tragic car accident — far too reminiscent of Princess Diana’s demise to be in good taste — occurs. Unable to get anywhere with the law, Laramie straps on the boots and unleashes his own brand of kick-ass (ho-hum) justice. Sizemore gets the shit job of playing the head sleaze, Robin Tunney gets dragged along as Laramie’s numbed-out wife, and Dennis Farina almost walks away unscathed as the detective playing cat and mouse with Laramie. At the Apple Valley, Entertainment, Holiday, Providence Place 16, Showcase, and Tri-Boro cinemas. (85 minutes)
