Phoenix papers snag 18 NEPA awards

The Phoenix newspapers won 18 awards — including 10 first-place citations — in the 2004 New England Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. The winners were announced this past Saturday, at the organization’s annual banquet at the Park Plaza in Boston.

The Providence Phoenix claimed two awards: frequent contributor Brian C. Jones took the top honors in general news for "Slow recovery," published August 22, 2003, which described how moving on remained difficulty for the individuals and establishments touched by the Station nightclub fire in February 2003. News editor Ian Donnis won a third-place prize in the social issues feature category for "The peacemakers," published September 5, 2003, which reported on how Providence, beneath a thin veneer, remains a poor, violent city, and how eight street workers were trying to make a difference by going to the city’s toughest neighborhoods.

Writers for the Boston Phoenix and Portland Phoenix also won first-place prizes.
