Tuning into the Vote for Change Tour

Vote for Change Tour fundraising sponsor MoveOn.org is hyping next Monday’s concert as the "grand finale" to the 13-date Bruce Springsteen–engineered tour. But Columbus Day’s Washington, DC, Vote for Change performance is actually the penultimate grand finale, or some term that means it’s the second-to-last show on the political grand tour. New Jersey must have been feeling a little, er, blue, so Springsteen extended the tour to play his home state the following Wednesday. But with 13 performers reportedly taking the stage in hopes of motivating swing-state voters to dethrone Bush and his gang, Monday evening is a culmination of sorts. Especially since the live Washington, DC, performance will not only be broadcast on the Sundance Channel, but will also be preceded by National Anthem: Inside the Vote for Change Tour, a documentary collaboration by Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter) and D.A. Pennebaker (Don’t Look Back). And with the assistance of MoveOn.org, the cable broadcast can be an interactive and localized experience: the progressive-left sponsor is inviting members to host house parties, join an online conference call featuring 30 minutes of "messages" from Springsteen and his Bush-bashing buddies, and write letters — presumably during the boring parts, like, say, John Fogerty’s set — to undecided swing-state voters encouraging them to pull the lever for Kerry. During the concert, expect heartwarming renditions of Patti Smith’s "People Have the Power," an instrumental version of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and at least one cover of "Masters of War." And maybe you already know that "Born in the U.S.A." is actually an anti-war anthem. Sundance Channel will broadcast National Anthem: Inside the Vote for Change Tour, followed by live performances by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bonnie Raitt, the Dave Matthews Band, the Dixie Chicks, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Jurassic 5, Keb’ Mo’, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Pearl Jam, and R.E.M. at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 11.
