Yankees' evilness in A-Rod deal proves poetic

What was worse: that the Providence Journal used a New York Times story ("Ultimate indignity for Red Sox nation") as its lead on Monday, February 16, driving home what we already knew to be true in our New England hearts — that the Yankees had stolen Alex Rodriguez from under our sleeping noses? Or that the Times used an even more incisive and cutting headline ("Summer or winter, the Yankees show the Red Sox how to win") while featuring the same Murray Chass story on its front page? When we got down to it, nothing could come close to equaling the pain and hurt of New York’s acquisition of A-Rod, perhaps the premier player in baseball, on the eve of spring training — proof positive of the utter ruthlessness of the Yankees. Perhaps, if we’re incredibly lucky, Boston will still triumph in the end. For now, though, it’s time for the Red Sox faithful to cope in their own individual ways with quiet reflection, heavy drinking, and yes, even haiku. March tickles the air Winter offers discontent A-Rod a Yankee Suffering now Unlikely to go away Curse always goes on Steinbrenner Cheshire Theo and gang caught napping A-Rod in stripes Loss from victory Plucked always this cruel way The fates howl at us
