The new 3 Doors Down album is called Away from the Sun, but it
might as well be called A Dozen Reasons Why "Kryptonite" Will Still Be the
Encore. Still, the Mississippi modern-rock group who turned Superman's
weakness into a massive radio hit have no reason to be feeling
dark-side-of-the-moonish these days, with their new album cracking the Top 40
and a number-one hit at mainstream rock radio with "When I'm Gone." Currently
out on tour with Theory of a Dead Man, whose Roadrunner debut was
co-written and produced by that insufferable singer from Nickelback, 3 Doors
Down play two shows at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel (401-272-5876) in Providence
this week -- Saturday's show sold out in advance, prompting the addition of
another on Tuesday.
Not to be outdone by Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lily?, Wu-Tang Clan
accomplice Cappadonna and pals turned the same trick -- that is, taking
an old kung-fu flick and overdubbing their voices -- with a direct-to-video
affair last year titled Cappadonna's Iron Fist Pillage (the first in a
planned series of "Flix Remix" releases by a company called Skypilot
Entertainment), which spawned two distinct soundtrack releases and stoned
laughter in all quarters. As a promotional gimmick, Cap also pulled an Iron
Chef and came up with his own munchie-beating recipe for a signature dish
he calls "Beat Bustin' Mango Yo Tango"; you can ask him to cook up a bowl when
he joins fellow Wu warriors Inspectah Deck, Killah Priest, and
Remedy at Lupo's on Wednesday and at Higher Ground (802-654-8888) in
Winooski, Vermont, next Thursday, January 23.
We doubt she'll do any cooking, but the Australian housewife known to her
possums as Dame Edna and to his mother as Barry Humphries stops by the
Merrill Auditorium (207-842-0800) in Portland, Maine, for four shows this
Friday through Sunday. Violinist Yo-Yo Ma stops at the same joint on
Tuesday before playing a sold-out concert at Symphony Hall (617-266-1200) in
Boston on Wednesday. Yo-Yo is not to be confused with the latest
Pokémon-style Japanese-trading-card-game craze Yu-Gi-Oh; a
traveling convention for the game hits the Northshore Mall (978-531-3440) in
Peabody on Saturday and Sunday. If after that flurry of syllables you find
yourself looking for an international traffic cop, we suggest heading to Higher
Ground on Sunday, where the NYC buzz band Interpol -- who really don't
sound as much like Joy Division as everyone says they do -- perform with
Calla, yet another buzzed-about indie group from NYC via Texas whose new
Televise is out next week on Arena Rock.
