SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON
Here DreamWorks Pictures attempts to beat Disney in the
heartwarming-yet-educational-animated-movie-epic category. Kelly Asbury and
Lorna Cook team up for the story of a noble mustang horse who's continually
being captured by the greedy human settlers of the American West. With Matt
Damon voicing the title character, it's a "history of America told from the
heart of a horse." Spirit wants to present a journey of love and freedom
against a backdrop that takes in Native Americans and ecological preservation,
yet in the end it succumbs to the allure of computer technology. Parents will
find the circle pan shots breathtaking, but they may also titter when they
notice that every equine expression recalls the mugging of the Rock in The
Scorpion King. Although not up to Lion King standards,
Spirit's mix of action, love, birth, death, and revenge should satisfy
the "G" audience. At the Apple Valley, Entertainment, Flagship, Holiday,
Hoyts, Showcase, and Tri-Boro cinemas.
