ODD DUCK Quirky by design, LEON REDBONE brings a certain charm to being a throwback to a long-gone era. The singer’s dedication to the offbeat tunes of the ’20s, ’30, and ’40s has given his music a cartoonish demeanor, but there’s usually something floating through his performances that lets you know this is his where his heart truly lies. He’ll bring his mumbled vocals and swinging guitar to Chan’s, 267 Main Street, Woonsocket, at 8 pm | $33 | 401.765.1900

LOVE THAT DARES TO SPEAK ITS NAME From his grand artistic rise in the late 1800s to his penniless death at the turn of the century, Oscar Wilde ruffled more feathers than he wore, and metaphorically he wore plenty. The famed writer lived a queer lifestyle of rentboys and cross-dressing that upended Victorian morals and earned one of literature’s great wits a couple of years in jail. 2nd Story Theatre’s adaptation of GROSS INDECENCY: THE THREE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE should bring lots of life to Moises Kaufman’s portrait of a “brilliant and complicated man.” Ed Shea is the troupe’s artistic director. His take: “Embraced in beautiful language, Gross Indecency’s topic is self-expression — being one’s authentic self, repression versus celebration, which is something Oscar Wilde dealt with throughout his life. To me, while the play deals with the expression of his sexuality, or as he puts it, ‘the love that dares not speak its name,’ I see it as a spiritual journey.” The show is at 28 Market Street, Warren, through October 28 | $25 | 401.247.4200

LIVE ON STAGE Veteran bar rats know that JIMMY THACKERY kicked their butts for several years when he was the heart and soul of the Nighthawks. The guitarist has been on his own for a while, and if you’ve heard some of the stinging instrumentals on this year’s Solid Ice (Telarc), you know his touch gets better and better. He’s evidently cutting material for a live disc at Chan’s, 267 Main Street, Woonsocket, at 8 pm | $33 | 401.765.1900
