The Henry Rollins Show
on IFC was there at the mid-’80s inception of the genre, a rocker laying moody pensées on an audience of leather jackets. Now he can pack out a good-sized concert hall, whereas fellow originators Jello Biafra and Lydia Lunch have trouble filling a club. But Rollins’s generously expanded definition of spoken word, his mish-mash of stand-up, satire, storytelling, and motivational speaking, has broken the Golden Rule of Countercultural Art: it’s actually a good time.
