SIDE BETS
Some 18 months back, Montreal’s Wolf Parade seemed poised to become the next Arcade Fire. We’re still waiting for a follow-up to their celebrated 2005 debut,
Apologies to the Queen Mary
, but in the interim, singer/keyboardist Spencer Krug has released two albums with his so-called side project
SUNSET RUBDOWN
: last year’s
Shut Up I Am Dreaming
(Absolutely Kosher), and now their Jagjaguwar debut,
Random Spirit Lover
, a knotty sprawl of an album that comes out this Tuesday. They kick off a tour in its support — with
MAGIC WEAPON
, whose line-up includes Sunset Rubdown’s Jordan Robson Cramer, and Wolf Parade guitarist Dante DeCaro’s
JOHNNY AND THE MOON
— downstairs at the Middle East, 480 Mass Ave Cambridge | 617.864.EAST.

The Lowdown
Four venues offering the best live alt-rock-rap-art from local and national acts, along with great food.
Best Club For Rock
The trusty Middle East takes the crown. No surprise there: the four-venues-in-one Central Square stalwart continues to bring in the best local and national bands and present them satisfyingly loud and clear, as every good rock club should.
Best Club For Hip-Hop
The Boston hip-hop scene is definitely thriving these days: talented local MCs, DJs, and producers are constantly emerging, while national acts are ever more frequently coming to town. And all this with only a handful of hip-hop-friendly venues. As your votes show, the Middle East has stepped it up on the hip-hop tip over the past few years, hosting shows by big national names like Royce Da 5’9”, underground heroes like Murs, and loads of local faves like the Perceptionists and Slaine.
