Brooklyn’s Damwells like to surround themselves in gentle, softly lilting melodies, and a late-night, lovelorn moodiness. On "Goodnight Tonight" a subtle synth line undergirds the background trill of a sax and the barely perceptible snap of percussion. The chiming guitar tones and somnambulant synth textures of "While You Can" create a lethargic brand of dream pop. The foursome occasionally prove they can rock out, but their favored approach is to retreat into melancholy whenever they’re on the verge of really cutting loose. In that, their best tunes resemble the balladeering rock of the Goo Goo Dolls. This seven-song, 30-minute album is more substantial than an EP, but not quite a full-length disc — the perfect analogy for a band who are not quite rock, but are a little more challenging than simple pop.
